I have given this exact same advice dozens of times. It goes for both cartoonists and illustrators. If I notice that the link to your website has a deviant art url, there’s a 98% chance I’m not even gonna click on it.

I find it funny that people back up their “I wont check your art because it’s on dA” with phrases like “deviantART is ugly” and difficult to navigate”. It’s one of the easiest sites to browse art according to your interests. If you find it difficult to browse, then you’re just not trying.

Also there’s a lot of professional artists there who were hired off the site, like spacecoyote, rahll and adonihs, to name some. 

I’m not saying as an artist you shouldn’t have your own portfolio for professional purposes because you definitely SHOULD, but discriminating an illustrator or cartoonist because the url is from deviantART is just narrow-minded. You might be missing an amazing artist just cause you dislike deviantART. 

Edit: “Baby cartoonists” might not have the money to buy their own domain and keep up a portfolio site, so dA is a good alternative as they offer a portfolio showcase (which you can customise and even forward to your own domain name) besides the default gallery setup.

One of my  two PMD-Explorers Pokémon, Lumiere the Litwick. I absolutely adore this Pokémon and I still have no idea why I haven’t trained one yet in my Pokémon Black.

I’ll upload the art for my other Pokémon tomorrow.
